Like a Rolling Stone? On the use of quantitative methods during a small scale excavation

Between 1997 and 2001 the Faculty of Archaeology of Leiden University (The Netherlands) in collaboration with the Muséee National de Préhistore in Les Eyzies de Tayac (France) undertook a small scale survey of the fluvial deposits of the Vézère river (Dordogne, France). This research consisted of archaeological, geological, paleontological and methodological work. In 1999 the team made a small sondage in front of the abri Laugerie-Haute Est.
This papers presents examples of the application of formal methods during this excavation. Formal methods were used to establish the nature of the archaeological layers, in situ or not, and to make a distinction between the different flint industries from the various layers.
