Use and abuse of Digital Terrain/Elevation Models

The workshop will start with a lecture showing the advantages, the disadvantages and the many pitfalls of available algorithms in creating a DTM/DEM. The main focus will be on the processing of common data in archaeology: measurements coming from a regular grid; coming from contour lines of a map; coming from random points in the area.

After the lecture, computers with the application Surfer 8.0 will be available for the participants. A few datasets, from real archaeological sites as Muro Tenente and San Pancrazio (The Salento region in Southern Italy) and Sakkara (The environment of the Step Pyramid in Egypt), are ready for processing, but participants are invited to bring their own data along.

People with own data should provide this in an Excel- or LOTUS-sheet or an ASCII-file. The data should be organised in columns with XYZ co-ordinates.

Please inform the CAA2003 organisation if you intend to participate, as the number of PC's will be limited. For questions on the subject contact Willem Beex, willem_beex@wxs.nl.

Keywords: DTM, DEM, GIS, slopes, cost-analysis
