Excavations at Uthina: applications CAD and GIS for the site reconstruction

The Roman city of Uthina, located about 50 Km from Carthage, was founded probably before 27 B.C. Excavations have concerned a central area of the ancient city, occupied mainly by public buildings. The imposing ruins brought to light during the ten excavation campaigns carried out so far (1995-2002) seem related to a hydraulic system for supplying water to the north-western side of the city.
Multidisciplinary team is working at excavations; CAD applications are employed for survey of structures and layer, useful to the reconstruction of the formation process of archaeological stratigraphy and to the 3D modelling. Data resulting from excavations are structured in a multimedia relational database and jointed with map in a G.I.S. application.
This work is developed in the frame of the cooperation agreement between the Institut National du Patrimoine of Tunis and the University of Cagliari (Italy). Since 1999 this project, coordinated by Antonio M. Corda (Cagliari University) and H. Ben Hassen (INP of Tunis) has been a Pilot Archaeology Project of the Italian Foreign Office.
