REALonline - an interdisciplinary picture database

By means of the database REALonline the "Institut für Realienkunde des Mittelalters und der frühen Neuzeit" has a powerful instrument at its disposal which can be applied in connection with various problems of cultural sciences. In its present state - the database is continuously enlarged in connection with systematic photographical documentation activities of the institute, yielding an annual increase of about 800 objects - REALonline comprises about 15.000 objects from the Middle European area, covering a time span from 1200 until 1550. The picture database includes panel paintings, mural paintings, manuscript illumination, sculptures and preserved original objects (objects of every day life, arms and armours, all kinds of instruments etc.). The objects are described in detail in connection with digitalized photos. The database is based on a hierarchical structure which enables searching on the basis of combined characteristics within single categories and groups of informations. The most important of these groups concern artist, topic, artistic origin, events, historical places pictured, persons, gestures, clothing, objects, etc.
