Computers in Moroccan Archaeology: first results from Paleolithic sites

Since the beginning of the XXè Century, several Palaeolithic sites were discovered in Morocco. But the scientific searches began only in the late 70's. These searches are accompanied by several operations of prospections in various zones.
In 1999, we began archaeological excavations and prospections in the North of Morocco which is only 14 kilometres far from the South of Europe. We tried since the year 2001 to computerize the data issued from our searches and the EDM system was used for the first time in a Middle Palaeolithic site in the Tangier area (North of Morocco).
The computerization of our archaeological searches consists in:
The use of a Total Station connected with a computer. The survey results and the archaeological objects are recorded in the field and downloaded to a central computer.
The use of the bar codes which minimize the errors in the identification and the sorting of the archaeological objects.
To make ready data bases which contain the results of the prospections and the use of GIS.
It is true that the use of these techniques is new in Morocco, but the first results are very encouraging and will help us know better and to protect our Cultural Heritage.
