Imaging the dead

We present the results of CAT-scanning and subsequent computer based 3-D visualisations of two of the best preserved bog bodies ever found: the Grauballe man and the Tollund man. Both bog bodies date to the early Iron Age, ca. 200 BC, and where found in Jutland, Denmark in the 1950´s.
Our analyses focused on obtaining complete documentation of the state of preservation, as well as gaining new data for forensic medical interpretation of cause and manner of death. The computer visualisations also served as basis for craniofacial reconstruction by way of stereolithography. We find that CAT-scanning and 3-D visualisation is an excellent technology to these ends. We will present this technology and samples of the 3D visualisations, as well as a discussion of the results.
