In
1997, the Cultural Virtual Reality Laboratory (CVRLab) initiated
the Rome Reborn project, which has the goal of creating a
real-time 3D computer model of ancient Rome at various points
in time from the Iron Age to the mid-sixth century A.D. Modeling
commenced with the late-antique phase (ca. 400 A.D.) and with
the city center, viz., the Forum Romanum. This sub-project
of the overall Rome Reborn project was completed in December,
2002. The purpose of this talk will be to show the Forum Romanum
model and to discuss the issues of general interest to 3D
computer modelers of cultural heritage sites around the world.
Foremost among these is the attempt to include metadata about
each element making up the overall model (the temples, basilicas,
etc.). The metadata fall into two categories: catalogue metadata;
and commentary metadata. These will be explained in detail,
and future plans for enhancing 3D models with metadata will
be mentioned, viz., harmonizing our emerging metadata! standard
with the Dublin Core; linking the metadata more organically
with the pertinent features of models; and making the metadata
more fine-grained.
Key words: virtual reality and cultural heritage, metadata,
