Development of Digital archives of archaeological resources: New opportunities of archaeological computing in India

In spite of the advances in the multidisciplinary research in Indian archaeology, the applications of computers and Information Technology has rather remained poor and neglected. Nevertheless with the explosion of the Information Technology and computing in India some new advances have been made by a few institutions and Universities in the country in the field of multimedia application on heritage related areas . One of the major attempt in this direction has been made by the department of archaeology, HNB Garhwal university, Srinagar, Garhwal in developing the CAD applications in archaeology and efforts are also being made to introduce some new computing and IT tools in archaeology. The present paper discuss the status of the work on 3D graphics using 3d scanners, CAD and other visualization tools, and web-enabled RDBMS (archives) of non-graphical attributes of Indian archaeological potteries under the collaborative research programme with the Archaeological Technology Laboratory (ATL), North Dakota state University, USA. It also highlights the new opportunities it offers in the field of visualization, shape modelling, digital archives and internet applications in Indian archaeology in near future.
