The Background CVI, a Tool for Landscape Classification?

Viewshed analysis has been employed in many recent GIS studies to support presumed visual relationships between the landscape and archaeological features within it, or between those features themselves. In these studies the cumulative viewshed has been used to model and quantify the perceived 'importance' or level of visual control of locations on a DEM. However, because the properties of cumulative viewsheds are still poorly understood it has been difficult to decide whether the viewshed properties of features of archaeological interest are significantly different from those of randomly chosen locations. This paper presents some case studies exploring the properties of random or 'background' cumulative viewsheds and their potential for classifying the landscape into meaningful units
Key words: viewshed analysis, landscape classification
