Some tasks of reconstruction in archaeology (osteology and ceramics).

The tasks of reconstruction of a whole object from its fragments are frequent in archaeological research. Usually a part of them is solved with the help of multivariate statistic analysis and another part needs different methods and approaches. This paper deals with two questions of reconstruction. The first is the problem of determination of cattle's sex and height in withers on the base of the metapodials. The program was worked out by application of discriminant and regression analyses. Osteological data on the ancient and medieval assemblages found in Eastern and Western Europe were studied by Prof. A. Petrenko. The second question to be solved is connected with reconstruction of a vessel form from the fragments. Investigation of the Volga Bulgaria ceramics (jointly with A. Kotchkina) demonstrates successful example of reconstruction of pottery forms by application of correlation and regression analyses. Sizes and forms of the vessels, which were defined by this method give an opportunity to describe precisely its geometrical characteristics. Special computer programs were created jointly with Dr. L. Bakhteeva. The investigations were supported by Russian Foundation for Basic Research.
