Internet based stone artefacts database

The paper will present an Internet based database system for registration of stone artefacts. The system provides tools for controlling the consistency of the incoming information. As it is based on XML technology it is format independent and the data can be imported or exported in possible database formats. The database contains planigraphic, stratigraphic and detailed archaeological information about the artefacts - qualitative characteristics such as row material, shape, section, dorsal pattern, profile, etc., and quantitative characteristics - length, width, and thickness. Because some of the characteristics to be entered are interdependent the system will control the inputted information in order to assure its consistency for any future statistic or other processing. The programme allows both the local and distant input of information, which makes it very suitable for fieldwork. The application has a user-friendly interface and permits the choice between several languages for the characterisation of data - English, German, French, and Bulgarian. As it is based on an open architecture, new languages and new features can be added to it in the future.
