"It's the Best, Forget the Rest: A Design for a 3D Scanner Tailored to Archaeology."

In the light of the recent exciting developments in the recording of excavations by construction of 3D models from series of modelled single context surfaces, the author will defend his view that the current range of commercial data acquisition hardware is inadequate for the task. A conceptual model for a new 3D modelling data acquisition device will be presented which overcomes the perceived shortcomings and which will, in addition, perform other important data gathering functions on the archaeological excavation.
Key words: laser-scanner, 3D, modelling, excavation
