The
main goal of this work is to make the construction of spatial
artefact distribution schemes simpler and less time-consuming.
The author has proposed a method of producing artefact distribution
plans using Golden Software Surfer 6.04 mapping program. Preliminary
created electronic database contained the typological description
of each artefact and its location.
This method allows to:
1. Produce artefact density schemes (per 1 square meter or
0,5 square meter)
2. Produce distribution schemes of the selected flint tool
category.
3. Compare the different density schemes and plans of excavations.
This method was tested on the flint finds collection of the
Kamennaya Balka I site, situated in the delta of Don river
(Southern European Russia), investigated by Prof. N. Leonova
(Moscow State University) in 1978-1992. This collection contains
about 21000 pieces.
As a result, six artefact accumulations were traced for this
site, each with its own economic distinguishing features.
Our analysis of economic structure of the site allowed us
to assume that there were probably a dwelling or living floor
on the central plot of its territory.
