Recent Advances on ArchEd

The ArchEd program is an interactive tool for visualizing Harris matrices in archaeology. ArchEd supports different input/output possibilities for Harris matrices, it contains comfortable data editing routines, and it is embedded into an comfortable editor. The main focus, however, in ArchEd lies on the routines for automatically generating layouts, and on feasibility checking routines.
ArchEd was developed as a student project by Igor Pouchkarev and Stefan Thome under the supervision of Petra Mutzel, and Christoph Hundack. Since 1998 it is publically available on the www (now in Vienna, see http://www.ads.tuwien.ac.at/~ArchEd). Two years after releasing version 1.0 of ArchEd, we have resumed our development work.
Recently, ArchEd has been extended to surfaces (in addition to normal strata). moreover, it contains a new orthogonal drawing style. Version 1.3 offers a new export function to the enhanced metafile format, which can be used to import the drawing into MSWord documents. The latest version contains a new function for exporting Harris Matrices into AutoCAD.
We would like to discuss the further development of ArchEd with interested archaeologists visiting the workshop and are looking forward to interesting discussions and contacts
