In
1999 we developed a prototype web-accessible database of the
UNESCO World Heritage list, which we later developed into
a TimeMap interactive web map. With support from the UNESCO
World Heritage Centre, we have recently redesigned the database
to incorporate detailed information about individual sites,
including nomination documents and interactive web maps of
local site plans. The database also allows the public to register
and upload additional resources, such as photographs, QVTR
scenes, commentary and links to site-specific web sites.
In this paper we will describe the construction of the interactive
database and web maps, using MySQL and TimeMap software, and
address the issues of building an open-access contributory
spatial database on the web.
