Between soil and computer - Digital registration of field data on a Danish excavation project
 

Extensive excavations are carried out in the northern part of Denmark previous to the construction of a new highway in the coming years. The excavation project is the largest project of such a character ever carried out in Denmark. In connection with this project procedures and systems for digital registration and connection between field data has been developed to obtain as rational and uniform a registration as possible. In the field of digital archaeology new experiences has come out of the project, which will set out new standards for future archaeological fieldwork in Denmark. This paper presents the registration systems, the use of handheld computers, digital surveying, linking of databases to GIS systems etc. throughout all levels of investigation.
