Over
the years the Antwerp Archaeological Department has accumulated
an enormous heap of archaeological data and objects on the
history of this important Belgian town. Being part of the
City's Planning and Development Company, the Archaeological
Service's core-business does not include the presentation
of the results in a museum context. However, bringing the
results of our archaeological research to the public is a
major concern in the policy of the Archaeology Department.
The internet is a very flexible and convenient instrument
to reach a very wide and differentiated public on a world
scale. The idea was born to create a website that not only
presented the usual general information one can find on many
sites, but that includes a virtual museum. The result is the
Archeoweb Antwerp, a most inspiring and intelligently constructed
website containing information on over 40 excavation sites
and over 200 objects, grouped around different themes and
periods. The associated database can easily be updated with
new information.
At first the website was only available in Dutch but from
December 2002 onwards the Archeoweb Antwerp also contains
a French, German and English version. The large (and constantly
growing) number of visitors to the website clearly indicates
the success of this initiative. Convince yourself at http://archeologie.antwerpen.be
