Up & Down. Scaling archaeological data provided by GIS based procedures: Up-scaling areas of economic interest in the Neolithic - a comparative case study from the Rhineland and the Wetterau/Germany

Several bandkeramik settlement-areas in the Rhineland have been completely excavated and their data support a serious calculation of the necessary economic space. This presentation focuses on the calculation of areas of economic interest during bandkeramik times, and their reconstruction in the landscape using GIS. As a shortage of land for grazing and crops may have led to economic and social conflict, it is necessary to obtain reliable data with regard to the demand on land in bandkeramik times. An up-scaling of these well known sites helps in our understanding of the process in other regions where our knowledge is less complete.

Key words: Bandkeramik, Landscape Archaeology, Economic Areas, Neolithic, GIS
